The Senior Center staff provide assistance to Seniors with a wide variety of services, including:

Medicare D (Prescriptions) & Medicare Advantage Plans

October 15th-December 7th is open enrollment EVERY year. Changes take effect January 1. Every year beneficiaries have the opportunity to make changes. MMAP (Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program) for Seniors 60+ can call to make an appointment. Beneficiaries who are under the age of 60, can call 269-983-0177 and ask to speak with a MMAP counselor. We apologize for any inconvenience, unfortunately we are trying to keep up with high volume of "baby boomers" currently. If you are 60+ and new to Medicare, please specify that when making an appt.

Commodities sign up   Must meet eligibility requirements. Refer to our newsletter for commodity information.

Monthly Podiatry sign up   Jane Sherwin, RN is available to help clip your toenails! Call the center to make an appointment. She must have a note from your MD giving her permission first before she can assist you. Forms are available at Receptionist desk.

Michigan Property Tax and Home Heating Credits (See Tax Preparation below)

Tax Preparation

Here are a few helpful reminders:

  • 1. We are not paid tax preparers. If you have a concern with your taxes done by a professional preparer last year, then you need to please contact that preparer.
  • 2. We have to stay within our scope of practice. We are not able to complete taxes for individuals drawing income from rental properties, active military, etc. This is a volunteer service. Tax preparers are volunteering their time, they do not work at the Senior Center. Please be kind.
  • 3. Please CLARIFY whether you actually need "full, federal filing income tax preparation done", or just state of Michigan home heating credit/property or renter's credit filing. Was it completed on paper or computer last year with us? This is extremely important to ensure your appt. is made with the correct tax person!
  • 4. If we cannot fit you in, there are other resources. Some include: Niles/Cass District Library, surrounding area Senior Centers, University of Notre Dame, United Way Volunteer sites, and regular paid tax preparers. We cannot make recommendations who you should see.
  • 5. Please bring all your paperwork with you that is required.  This helps keep the appointments run smoothly.
  • 6. This is a high demand service in our area. It is designed for low income seniorswho reside in Michigan.

For Your Convenience

1. Use our FAX.  We don't charge for faxing to local or toll-free numbers; there is a small charge for long distance

2. Have documents notarized.  (Call for an appointment)

3. Have copies made for 10 cents per page.

4. Use our computer lab for internet access, emails, and projects.

Veterans' Service Officer

Berrien County Veteran's Service Officer can explain benefits available to veterans and answer questions on how to obtain assistance. Someone will be here the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 9:00-11:00a.m. You can also call their office at 269-983-7111 for assistance.

Loan Closet

The Center has a limited amount of medical equipment--walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, commodes, etc. for "Short-term" loan to Seniors. Stop in between during business hours 8:00-4:00 to pick up and sign out a loan item.
